What does it cost to write a BESTSELLER?

TIME

I'm not an accountant. I don't enjoy spending hours in Excel and Xero (does anybody??). So I wouldn't dream of filing our company accounts without the help of our accountant and our lovely, plain-speaking financial director. They teach me what I need to do, explain what I need to know and why in layman's terms and keep me accountable with important dates and regular check-ins. The end result: me and HMRC are both happy (so are the FD and accountant) and I'm much more confident about the company numbers. The job gets done. Not just that but it gets done well and on time, which certainly wouldn't happen if I tried to do it solo.

I'm an entrepreneur as well as a writing coach, so I am acutely aware of how precious your time is. Writing is no different to any other endeavour in your business. If you lack clarity, skill, support, guidance, experience and accountability it will take a lot longer to reach your goal.

I have worked with so many authors over the years that have come to me with a draft that just wasn't working. Perhaps they started years ago and stalled or perhaps it was the wrong concept or too many concepts, which resulted in confusion. Most authors that start the process on their own don't even reach that point. They start, waste time on it, realise it isn't working and give up with the thought that 'I can't do this'. Which is completely understandable, but it's not true. 

I don't take any joy in telling someone who has slogged away at something that we basically need to throw it in the bin and start again but I take IMMENSE pride in my work and seeing the results my authors get from publishing the 'RIGHT' book. That is exactly what I want for you.

MONEY

Aside from hours, days, months and even YEARS of your precious time spent figuring this out on your own there are options out there for you, if you have the budget.

Option 1 - The Ghostwriter

Ghostwriters range in price and skill HUGELY, with the bottom end of the market still being around the £10,000 mark. The biggest issue with a ghostwriter is the book sounding like it was written by you in your authentic voice. Now, if you'd written a cookbook or novel that wouldn't matter. However, for a book that is so closely aligned to your personal brand and your business, it is a MASSIVE factor. Something that we work on with our authors a lot is authentic voice and tone. It is the difference between a reader connecting with you or not (pretty high stakes stuff). Ghostwriting is also not a very quick process. Don't think you are handing over a job that you don't want to do and in a few weeks, someone is going to send you back a perfect manuscript ready to publish. You will be heavily involved (hours and hours of interviews) and there will be a lot of back and forth. You'll have to read, re-read and re-re-read everything and mark it up with your feedback.

Option 2 - Work With A Coach (Like Me!)

A great option if that fits your budget. The advice will be tailored to your situation/business and the coaching will be 1:1. There are a few things to consider when finding a writing coach. Very few have an in-depth understanding of small businesses and entrepreneurship and as a result, the book can be too reader-focused. Not a bad thing for your reader, but often a lot of tricks are missed when it comes to the book being the workhorse it can be for your brand (delivering leads while you sleep). Secondly, good coaches are not cheap and in-demand - I charge £3,000+vat for a 12-session coaching program and can only take on 2 new coaching clients a month. That is partly the reason why I wanted to put Authority together because there are far more people out there that can benefit from my value than I have hours in my calendar to work with 1:1.
